Notes:

Leonard Fisk Wheelock was born in Calais, Caledonia [now Washington] County, Vermont, 14 June 1804.¹ His parents moved to Watertown, Jefferson County, New York, by 1820, when his father, Leonard Wheelock, is enumerated in the census there.

Leonard F. Wheelock engaged in frequent land transactions, the first being "part of Great Lot Number Seven" in the village of Watertown which he purchased from Jason and Mary Fairbanks on 29 November 1826 for $350.² On 20 January 1829 he sold that same lot to Aaron Eames for $1150. He was apparently unmarried at the time, since no spouse is mentioned in the deed.³

Leonard F. Wheelock married in Rutland, Jefferson County, on 19 May 1830 Amanda Cynthia Anna Ketchum.⁴

On 16 October 1832 Leonard and his wife Amanda along with Otis Colwell and his wife Anna [Amanda's sister], all of Watertown, sold 19 1/3 acres of land "at the northeast corner of subdivion No 4 on great Lot No 43 in Rutland", Jefferson County, New York [where Amanda and Anna were born] to James Brown of the town of Champion in Jefferson County. This land was possibly acquired by Anna and Amanda from the estate of their deceased father, Eliphalet Ketchum, who died in 1814, and is buried in the South Champion Cemetery.⁵

Amanda died 20 June 1833, and is also buried in the South Champion Cemetery.⁶

On 25 May 1834 Leonard married Amanda's younger sister, Betsey Ketchum in Rutland.⁷

On 3 Aug 1838, Leonard F. Wheelock, his wife Betsey, with Joseph Kimball, his wife Luscinda(?), Charles B. Penniman and his wife Nancy, all of Watertown, sold land in Watertown to Jason Fairbanks.⁸ Leonard enaged in multiple additional land transactions in Jefferson County through 1847, many of which include his wife Betsey.

Leonard is enumerated in the 1840 U.S. census living in Watertown, with a male uner 5, a male between 5 and 9, a male between 10 and 14, a male between 15 and 19, and two males between 30 and 29, one of whom is presumably Leonard. Also in the household is a female under 5, a female between 5 and 9, a female between 10 and 14, a female between 15 and 19, and a female 30 to 29, presumably Betsey. The census shows more children than were had by Leonard and Betsey,⁹ suggesting that another family with possibly a single father was living with them.

In 1840 he was a fire warden in Watertown, and the pathmaster of Watertown first ward.¹²

Leonard was living in Watertown in 1850, wagonmaker, age 45, born Vermont, with Betsey, age 43, born New York, and Marion, age 14, Morris M., age 9, and Helen M., age 4, all with surname Wheelock, born in New York. Meredith Ward, age 25, born New York was also in the household.

By 1860 Leonard was living in Superior, Douglas County, Wisconsin, age 57, Merchant, born Vermont, with Betsey, age 55, Marion, 19, and Helen, 14, all born in New York..

He remained in Superior for the rest of his life. He was a large landowner, and served as Justice of the Peace, and coroner.¹⁰ On 24 June 1885 at the age of 81 he committed suicide by drowning himself in the Nemadji River. Newspaper articles said that he was in ill health, and had "some annoying business matters."¹¹ He is buried in the Nemadjii Cemetery with his wife.
